Did you know that the clothing industry is responsible for over 8% of total greenhouse emissions? When we talk about sustainable fashion we’re talking about clothing and fabrics that have been ecologically sourced. When companies take steps to make their supply chain more socially responsible, sourcing, production, distribution, marketing and consumption of these goods work to better our world. The United Nations defines sustainability as “development that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

saving the planet through sustainable clothing and fair-trade practices

Sustainability takes multiple different fronts in the clothing industry, including reducing our carbon footprint, advocating for equality and fair-trade, safe working environments and social justice, mindfulness of animal welfare, and the use of ecological integrity in the production of goods. But the greatest push on the suitability front is the use of transparent practices across the supply chain.

Why are creating sustainable products and fair-trade practices important?

The fashion industry is well known for overtaxing natural resources, pollution, the exploitation of workers and unethical practices throughout their supply chains. Transparency by companies who advocate for sustainability in their brand better ensure fair wages and better working conditions for their workforce. Most mass-produced garments are made in developing countries where workers are paid far below that of what is considered a living wage, causing worker exploitation and child labor infractions.

Most materials are produced from petroleum-based materials. Additionally, both production and disposal require a lot of energy. However, when you utilize biodegradable materials, natural fabrics, as wells as recycled fabrics, the amount of CO2 and greenhouse emissions produced during manufacturing is reduced.

Not surprisingly, the clothing industry is one of the largest consumers of water in the world. Used for washing, dying, treating and finishing products during the manufacturing process. For reference, it takes 7,000 liters of water to produce one pair of jeans. Additionally, many garment producers pollute local water sources during the manufacturing process.

When you work with clothing brands who offer sustainable products, you’re consciously purchasing more quality apparel, made to last longer, to reduce waste. These manufacturers use transparent practices throughout their production process, creating a better sense of where your products come from and how they are made.

Earthday.org gives us some ideas on how to have a more eco conscious fashion sense:

  • Educate yourself about sustainable clothing and fair-trade practices.

  • Buy less and shop for quality over quantity.

  • Choose natural materials – organic cotton, linen, or hemp.

  • Buy recycled fabrics – 100% recycled polyester, viscose (rayon), etc.

  • Research brands to identify those that are ethical and practice transparency and sustainability.

  • Buy local. Choose products that are manufactured in your own community and connected to the place, people behind them, local economy, and environment.
