Common Large Format Sign Materials

Banner Material for sign making

Printed Vinyl Banners

Vinyl banner material is ideal for indoor and outdoor banners used for events, business promotions, fundraisers, trade shows, and advertising. Vinyl banners are durable, flexible, and available in a variety of sizes for large-scale visibility. They are very affordable, so they are often used for temporary outdoor signage. We print on 13oz premium glossy or matte vinyl, quick hemmed and grommeted for easy hanging. These are great for sports, sponsor or event signage too.

Aluminum material for sign making

Interior & Exterior Aluminum Signage

Aluminum comes in different thicknesses. The thicker it is, the more ridged the surface. The two most popular gauges are 040 and 0080. 040 Aluminum is best for mounting to an existing ridged surface or for putting in a frame, or hanging. 080 aluminum is more stable, and is best for mounting on poles (such as parking signs) or with a frame.

Composite material for sign making

Aluminum Composite Signs

Aluminum composite panels provide a durable and professional-looking option for long-term outdoor signage. These signs are commonly used for business signs, construction signs, directional signage, and property displays. This durable material is a great alternative to aluminum signage, and is made by sandwiching composite board between thin aluminum. This offers a more affordable option with the rigidity of thicker aluminum.

Vinyl for printing decals

Printed Vinyl with UV Laminate

Vinyl graphics are commonly used for storefront branding, window decals, wall graphics, and vehicle advertising .Printed vinyl can be used for any number of things, including stickers, material for signs, vehicle wraps, wall, window, and surface coverings, and more. It is great for printing colorful, eye-catching signs, logos or messaging. It can be applied on interior or exterior surfaces, and comes in a variety of different adhesive strengths for versatility and long lasting branding.

Perforated print vinyl for window coverings

Perforated Print Vinyl

Perforated window film provides two-way visibility, allowing you to print business messaging similar to regular vinyl, but maintaining a view of the other side for window coverings on office buildings or vehicles. This material is great for turning your windows into a billboard and creating cohesive marketing for your business or organization.

Corrugated Plastic Signs

Corrugated plastic, often called coroplast, is one of the most popular materials for yard signs, real estate signs, political campaigns, and temporary outdoor promotions. It is lightweight, affordable, and weather resistant. This signage material is sturdy and ridged, offering an inexpensive option to outdoor temporary signage. When used with step-stakes these make great yard signs, but they can also be grommeted for hanging or placed in an A-Frame.

Magnetic material for magnetic signs

Magnetic Decals

By combining printed vinyl and magnet material, you can create the perfect temporary vehicle signage, that can be applied or removed as necessary. These also make great business card magnets for business giveaways.

Indoor vs Outdoor Sign Materials

Not all sign materials are designed for the same environment. Outdoor signs typically require weather-resistant materials that can withstand sunlight, wind, rain, and temperature changes. Indoor signs may focus more on appearance, portability, and lightweight construction.

Outdoor-friendly materials may include:

  • Corrugated plastic
  • Vinyl banners
  • Mesh banners
  • Aluminum composite panels
  • Adhesive outdoor vinyl

Indoor display materials often include:

  • Foam board
  • Retractable banner film
  • Indoor adhesive vinyl
  • Poster material

Selecting the correct material helps improve the lifespan and overall performance of your signage.

Choosing the Right Material for Your Project

The best sign material depends on several factors including:

  • Indoor or outdoor use
  • Temporary or long-term display
  • Mounting method
  • Weather exposure
  • Portability needs
  • Budget
  • Viewing distance
  • Branding and appearance goals

For example, temporary event signage may work well with corrugated plastic or vinyl banners, while long-term business signage may benefit from aluminum composite panels or professionally mounted graphics.
